June 2025

In search of wow!

June is a big month to raise awareness and lover for the ocean. It is the UN World Ocean Day, the World Oceans Day and the sea turtle day.  The World Ocean Day's theme this year is 'Wonder, Sustaining What Sustains Us.'

"
The ocean’s wonder is what draws us in and often drives our desire to protect it.

Wonder is the foundation of scientific knowledge, the allure behind exploration, the curiosity that drives innovation and the seed of traditional wisdom."

Why do jellyfish glow?

Being curious about jellyfish led to a breakthrough in medical science - a sort of glow-in-the-dark paint for cells.  It lets scientists can see how cells move and shift inside our body, in real time. This development revolutionized medicine and won a Nobel Prize in chemistry.

And it all started with a question.

How a glowing jellyfish led to a Nobel Prize and changed the way scientists study living cells.

Innovation

Whale-inspired engineering

Scientist Frank Fish watched humpback whales glide through the water with such ease.  how can something so big move so smoothly?

The answer? Bumpy fins. Those bumps, called tubercles, inspired him to engineer a new kind of blade used in wind turbines, helicopters and other products.

What humpback whales can teach us about better wind energy. Nature’s design, reimagined for engineering.

A little square-shaped fish inspired a Mercedes-Benz a bionic car

In the early 2000s, Mercedes-Benz engineers set out to design a car that was both aerodynamic and structurally sound. Their search led them to the yellow boxfish—a small creature with a strange shape and surprising agility.

How can something so boxy move so smoothly, even in turbulent waters? what if a car could borrow that design?

The result was the 2005 Mercedes-Benz bionic concept car—one of the most aerodynamically efficient vehicles of its time.

Bionic design, shaped by nature.

Wow. that’s pretty cool.

How a little box-shaped fish inspired the design of a surprisingly aerodynamic concept car.

Storytelling

What is a day in the life of a blue whale like?

Despite being the largest animals to ever exist on earth, blue whales remain a mystery.  We know they’re on the brink of extinction, but we still don’t know much about how they live.

To find out, Planet Wild started using drones to place tiny camera robots on whales. the result? A rare chance to follow them through their day—and learn how to better protect them.

A rare look into the daily life of a blue whale—captured by drone-mounted cameras and shared by Planet Wild
